Summary

The son and husband of deaf women, Alexander Graham Bell spent much of his life doing research on hearing and elocution in an effort to invent devices that would help the deaf hear and communicate. His work on a "harmonic telegraph" would eventually lead to the invention he is best known for: the telephone. However, his new invention was not without controversy, as inventor Elisha Gray was also working on the telephone and had submitted a patent caveat on the same day as Bell submitted his patent application. With full-color photographs, a helpful chronology, and suggestions for further reading, Alexander Graham Bell describes the process leading to his landmark invention in addition to his innovations in areas including metal detection, optical telecommunication, and aeronautics.
