Summary

When the Aztec emperor Motecuhzoma first invited Spanish explorer Hernando Cortes into his city in 1519, it was a meeting between more than just two men—two vastly different worlds were colliding, and neither would be the same again. In the following years, Europeans poured onto the American continents from all directions. They brought the deep-rooted convictions of their own cultures, and one of the firmest of these was their faith in the Christian God and the need to spread this faith around the world. Then native peoples of American, however, had complex and certain beliefs of their own. Native Americans and Christianity explores the clash between these cultures and examines the various ways in which Native Americans, facing grave changes in their physical environments, met the challenge to their spiritual worlds as well.
