Summary

Before the first Europeans reached North American in 1492, Native Americans had established their own economies, communities, and methods of treating illness and disease. But with the onslaught of previously unknown European diseases such as smallpox, measles, and influenza, their age-old natural remedies and ceremonial healing rituals suddenly seemed powerless. Entire villages and tribes were decimated by epidemics.

But Native Americans managed to borrow and adapt European methods for fighting disease, and in turn they passed on their medical knowledge to explorers and settlers. Native American Medicine explores the ways in which North American Indian healing techniques not only offer physical cures, but also restore emotional and spiritual well-being.
