Summary

The literatures of the American Indian had come into existence nearly 28,000 years before Europeans began to write of their experiences in North America. The first works of Indian literature were songs, stories, and ritual dramas that Indians passed on orally to communicate their tribe's cultural beliefs to every new generation. In the late 18th century, Indians began to write in English and adopt non-Indian literary forms, often using their works to tell white audiences of their people's grievances. Like the Indian storytellers and singers of long ago, today's Indian authors use literature to preserve and celebrate their history and heritage.
