Summary

Doctors first used penicillin on a human patient in 1941. Since then, many bacteria have evoloved resistance to anitbiotiocs. Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria describes pathogens that have become particularly adept at evading a wide range of antibiotics, and highlights how scientists continue to strive to develop new treatments and countermeasures to fight this onslaught. Case studies and historical anecdotes are presented to provide context and aid in understanding the problems associated with antibiotic resistance. Various antibiotic-resistance scenarios of the future are outlined, as well as personal strategies individuals can use to reduce the likelihood of antibiotic resistance.

About the Author(s)

Patrick G. Guilfoile earned his Ph.D. in bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he studied how antibiotic-producing bacteria become resistant to their own antibiotics. He did postdoctoral research at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, on the interaction of bacteria and cells of the human immune system. He is now a professor of biology at Bemidji State University in northern Minnesota, where he teaches microbiology and medical microbiology. His most recent research has focused on ticks and tick-borne bacterial diseases, as well as the development of new laboratory exercises. He has authored or co-authored more than 20 papers in scientific and biology education journals; his most recent paper described a laboratory exercise using molecular methods for determining antibiotic resistance. He has also written a molecular biology laboratory manual and a book on controlling ticks that transmit Lyme disease.

Foreword by David Heymann, World Health Organization
